Attempting to view tag words in cloud format still gives a 500 Application Error. I see that VanishedOne broached this eight months ago. I just wanted to make sure it's on your to-do list, John. It would be a handy display to have for voluminously worded tags.

Edit: Well, dog my cats! Cloud format for the tag "ghosted" gives the 500 error, but, so far, other tag cloud function works fine. Must be something to do with all the words being unlisted. Go calculate!

Multiple tagability is very useful as tagmass increases, but the same user shouldn't be able to tag the same word twice.

John, I don't think it's a good idea for a word to have duplicated tags of the same tag. I tagged all my DEMON words "demon", then having added a few hundred more, did another MASS-TAGGING, not realizing it would double-tag the same tag upon the previous. Ick, ew, yuck!

On my profile page are multiple listings of two lists ("Technically It Means" and "To Busy to Scratch Myself") and one word (whippersnapper) that I did not favorite. I rarely use that feature of Wordie. What gives?

Now, why isn't there marmite with its 41 comments, or basonym with its 45? Both of them are on the most active threads page, but they don't appear on the most commented on list. Why is that? I haven't seen any change on that list for several days now. Is it broken? Or is the fault on my end (I've cleared the cache)?

Wordie's going all 500 Application Error on me when I add a word to a list (of mine, or anyone else's). Listing isn't unsuccessful; it just won't show anything but an error until the page is refreshed. Curious!

I just noticed that John fixed a bug which was preventing me from taking off particularly annoying word on my Favorites list. I think this was because it ended in a period.

The fact that the same list can be followed by a different number in parentheses, depending on whose profile it is recently favorited under, suggests that Pro's conjecture may not be correct.

Ok, not to tootle my own horn or anything, but I think I spy with my little eye a bug - I happened to be hanging at palooka's profile and I noticed s/he has my default list (arby's words) favorited. In the list of hir favorites, it says "18" after the list name, but in reality my list has 245 words!

I'm suddenly getting 500 Application Errors on trying to enter word URLs with words that aren't already in the database, e.g. http://wordie.org/words/meta-ideology

Entering them in the search box seems to redirect to e.g. http://wordie.org/words/word?id=meta-ideology

John, having the words "word search" in the search box makes it impossible to drag the words into it from the page I'm in and make a one-click search. OK, I'm very bad at describing it.
Just try to drag a word into the word search box and you'll understand what I mean.

Has something gone wrong with accented characters? I see élan redirects to elan and frappé to frappe, but by attempt to add négatité went awry when the Add Word page accepted négatité/n%E9gatit%E9 but turned it into n%EF%BF%BDgatit%EF%BF%BD on addition.

John! I can't delete one of my lists. I get a standard error message but this might be helpful, it said: "The uri of the page I couldn't find: /lists/delete/8342".

UPDATE: It gets a little weirder...maybe because it's an "older list" and you've changed code since? Anyway, after hitting "delete" on that list, I went to the words and added them to other lists, and they pop up as new words..so in some way this "delete" did take effect. But then when I go to my "your words" list, it's there. I go in, and I click on "delete" a few times to some random words, just for the heck of it, and BOOM, suddenly the 75-word list becomes a _2_ word list! Then, I delete those two words... and I'm left with a wordlist that says "75" but displays zero. Strange, huh. What do you make of it?

This is a weird bug. I did random word and arrived at a certain page, popcorn. I wrote a comment, clicked the Comment button. Comment loaded okay. I then clicked edit, revised my wording. Clicked Comment button again. Page reloaded with comment as I had typed it but under a different word! chaumas

So either it's something you can fix or else reesetee needs to delete the '?' if he's interested in people having the benefit of the tag. I, for one, would be a happy camper should the fix go in.

John, here's a cute little bug: I have "mingled" on my favorite words list, but it's labeled as "0 wordies list". Why aren't words on favorites lists included in the counts, when "most favorite", "least favorite" and "onomatopoeia that best describes" are?

John, I've figured out one way the word count for an open list can get out of sync with the number of words it contains. I added discumbent to the open list Take it lying down, then deleted it from Mollusque's miscellany. Deleting it there deleted it from both lists, but didn't change the word count on the open list. I then added "discumbent" back to the open list. This added one to its word count, which is now one too high.

This might be related to a similar bug. If a word is duplicated on a closed list, deleting one instance deletes both instances. However, one of the duplicates can be moved without moving the other. The word count is correct after either operation. (I haven't tested shared or open lists.)

There's at least one other kind of anomaly in word counts. The closed list The Ivy League has a word count double the number of words it contains. One of bylanternlight's other lists is empty, but I don't know if this is related.

Is it possible to fix the bug that causes a 404 error when one clicks on words which include a period? If not, perhaps the default should be not to accept such words (e.g. as currently happens if one tries to include a question mark). Being able to list a word, but not comment on it seems suboptimal.

Hi John. I can't delete the duplicated citation on skunk. It's the one with unintended brackets that came thru with the C&P. BTW, the link is an interesting one; maybe you haven't seen the site.

Edit: disregard, John, thanks to Prolagus. I was deleting all text in the edit box, which then didn't give rise to the 'delete' option for some reason. Anyway, now fixed.

Big problem: Non-members of Wordie can't see beyond the first 100 words in a list that's over 100 words long. I have a list with over 200 words, and people who are logged out can see only the first 100. It doesn't work for the non-member to click on "next" or "all."

This is too bad because I was just promoting Wordie on Metafilter today:

As you can see from the response, people over there are getting interested in Wordie. But it'd be better if they could see my whole list of words.

John, the problem with random words affects not only commenting on them but listing them. As an example, I found faineance by clicking random word. I added it to one of my lists, but dilatoriness was added instead. The connection between them is that both were on inkhorn's Words, listed adjacently, and on no other list. This pattern is sometimes reproducible: adding a random word that has been listed only once instead adds the next word on the list.

Just fixed the comments search bug.

As for random word, it's returning comments for the wrong word. I redid the query that gets random words a few days ago, and must have busted it, though I just looked at it and can't see anything wrong. I'll keep poking around, hopefully figure it out soon.

In my list "Italian bread varieties", for example, I use to add 1 to 40 words a day. After adding them, I tag them all, and of course what I do is adding the tags bread and italy to the whole list.
What I see is that the words added first have e.g. 8 total tags, that is 4 times my two tags - and I'm sure they're all mine...
Sorry if I gave a bad description - my English is context-dependent.

Well, C_b, I planned on pruning 'em out when discovered to have been added to some list. It's just a lark, and a perhaps misguided attempt to somehow provide a 'home for orphans', don'tcha know.

Hmmm. John, it looks like you've done something about ghost/listless words. I was tagging interesting ones "listless" as I found them via random word feature, just for the hell of it. Now random words appears not to show any ghost words and if I click on those already having my listless tag, a 500 application error results. Interesting. I'm debating whether to delete my list: "The Unlist"

I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.13 and when I click random word, it will show for example '7 wordies listing phalanx' but on the right side of the screen it won't show which wordies and which lists. If I want to see who is listing phalanx and I have to then type it into the search box and go to the page that way.
I'm not sure if this is a bug or the way things are meant to be.

John: My comment about question marks and periods was more to seek corroboration that my experience is the same as everyone else's, not a request to change anything, so please don't sweat it.

I agree with trivet that listing the top 50 most popular words in a 7-day window seems to add little over listing the top 10*, because most words on the longer list have a frequency of only 2 or 3.

Hey John, I'm not sure if this is actually a bug or not, but it bugs me so I guess it counts. :) When I make a comment with italics or a link in it and post it, then notice I made a spelling mistake, as on goffer... When I edit the comment and re-post, the formatting or link is gone. It's still in the comment box, but doesn't appear once it's posted.

For a while I've been getting around this by editing the comment again, copying the text, posting again (still shows up without formatting), then deleting that original comment and reposting a new one. However, as on goffer, I don't want to delete the original comment because someone's answered it. So now it's sitting there without italics, in the back of my fevered brain, slowly boring a hole through my gray matter as I try to concentrate on things like work. Thoughts? (About the formatting glitch, I mean, not my fevered brain.)

Hey guys, the lists bug is fixed (thanks VO, you called it).

Sionnach, some punctuation has special meaning when used inside a URL, so if a word or phrase contains, for instance, a question mark, the server gets confused. I can better escape special characters to allow their use. It's kind of a nutty week, I'll try and get to it this weekend.

By trial and error, I think I've figured out the following:

Entries containing a question mark are not accepted by wordie, though exclamation marks are OK (is there a reason why question marks are taboo in main entries?).

Entries containing a period are accepted; however, if you try to add a comment to such an entry, you will receive an error message. Is there a way to fix this?

This is based on my experience using Firefox.

Another thing I noticed is when I enter a word in the "search" box, just to see if it's ever been added before (or if I've spelled it right), if it's never been added it is supposed to bring up a page saying "nobody has added ___. Why don't you?"

It does that sometimes, still, but lately (past week or so) it sometimes brings up an ordinary-looking word page with "0 Wordies list" at the top. Which means it could certainly be a ghost word, except that when you click on anything on that page, such as "add to your list," it brings up an error page calling John terrible names like "slack bastard."

It doesn't much bother me, as there's a perfectly good work-around, but I thought I'd mention it.

I just noticed a problem with the list search feature. The "search again" form on the results page doesn't work... instead of searching for what I type in the field, it searches for an empty string (and of course returns no matches). So if I want to perform a second search, I have to go back to the main list search page.

I imagine John, that at some point you call toLowerCase or the Ruby equivalent on the string before putting it into the database. Since Ž is not a-zA-Z, the method would not doing anything to it. I doubt any programming language is smart enough to recognize the bizarre Unicode characters that have upper and lower case associated with them.

Edit: I'd actually meant to use square brackets as in regex syntax for a-zA-Z. Obviously that didn't work, but I think it turned out well anyway.

Just a very minor thing: Wordie defaults the case of a word to lower, except (it seems) with accented characters. So Žižekophobia and žižekophobia have different entries. Probably not worth worrying about though as I can't think of any other examples.

One bug that bugs me is that when you make a comment on one of your own lists and have notification turned on you get an email that says:

You have made a comment on one of your own Wordie lists.

etc.

I still fart a lot when I can but my short term memory is holding up. I don't need notifications to remind me of my own citations.

It didn't happen for every comment, but... it was only today that I thought maybe that's true only for comments on lists that have other contributors added to them...?

Fortunately, there is a convenient delete link immediately adjacent to her little spam dropping.

Yes. I have had the same experience that sarra describes when trying to edit my profile - specifically, HTML commands to create links in the "more about you" box are unsuccessful in creating the desired links.

I think the list description bug has eased itself a bit, but other editing ones still stand: the "more about you" box on my profile is currently choking. It's a symptom of a longstanding bug where sometimes, when a comment contains external links, they vanish upon editing and become no more than text. Which is better than nothing, but still perplexing.

Hey John; should I have the delete option on all these comments? A "mad deleter" could wipe 'em all out don'tcha think?

Edit: Now the option is gone after posting this. Here's what happened: I was deleting some of my otiose comments on this page and noticed that I had the option to delete not only my own comments but anybody's! For a trial I deleted one of your's which was moot...and it's fer sure gone! Gonna try it again now and see what happens...

Edit II: Here's the skinny. When I edit a comment to a blank box, then delete it, the delete option appears for all other comments on the page as well. It seems I've noticed this before but when it seemed to "fix itself" I forgot about it. What happened this time is I noticed the seeming fix but was able, by experiment, to cause the anomalous recurrence.

P.S.: Refreshing the page removes the delete option.

John, VanishedOne pointed out that on the page aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa*thud* we can't see the person who listed it. Thanks to a comment on that page, it looks like faintheart.

So, I did a search of Wordie looking for that user, and got several results, but couldn't click on any of the links.

Any ideas? Did I do something wrong?

Also I don't know if this is a bug or if I should even bring it up (because my favorite Obnoxious HTML tags aren't listed in the "Some HTML" popup, and yet old comments using them still display correctly) but it looks like HTML doesn't display on the home page in comments. At least, my little strike tag doesn't (on WeirdNet, if you must know). This is unfortunate because it makes my comment make much less sense.

Oh, I do not miss that subject line, but didn't notice it was gone. I'm glad someone noticed and patted John on the head for removing it--I was just blissfully unaware.

Like when driving from upstate New York into Vermont, and something feels different and good but you can't put your finger on it, until you realize (or someone tells you) that billboards are illegal in Vermont. You suddenly realize that you've NOT been missing them.

Yep, removed the subject line late last night. I agree, it does look a bit naked, but it didn't seem to be used much, and it did occasionally cause confusion. I figure if someone wants a subject heading, they can fake it with 'strong' tags.

Okay, I was just using the "search comments" feature and I discovered that on the results page, the search form at the top does not work -- it searches for a null string, rather than the value I type. So if I want to perform a second search, I have to go back to the main search page.

Seems to be a problem with the "add tags" box. It appears in an odd position at the top of the page and won't allow you to specify parts of speech.

The problem with the comment box not appearing on this page has clearly been fixed; regarding the one with delayed comment appearances, it seems from the comment feed that some people are talking about that on bug (or will later turn out to have done).
