The original motor (a Harley-Davidson) was named after the shape of the valve covers. The Panhead replaced the Knucklehead and then was itself replaced by the Shovelhead engine. :-)

WordNet doesn't seem to be pulling this one up, but Dictionary.com says, "a rivet or screw head having the form of a truncated cone."
