I don't know what the problem is with panties, really. But I think pantyhose is one of the ugliest words ever created. In fact... it's an Abomination. The word *and* the object.

Underpants is an absolute hoot. That word was made to be laughed at. Skivvies is a great word, too, but it applies to many different types of undergarment. I would think you'd rather call them manties, if only for the sake of precision.

I am definitely allergic to the word manties. Guys just plain wear underpants - that's all we need. No need to glamorize them. Boxers are ok too.

I hate panties, it's unnecessarily cutesy masquerading as "sexy". Manties, however, is hysterical and needs to be in wider usage.

Underpants is indeed far more hilarious than... well, almost any other word. However, uttering the word manties makes any male in the vicinity have an allergic reaction that is most pleasing to behold.

Look at the lists on the right, at how many people hate this word. I think it's refreshingly short, descriptive & covers the subject very nicely.
