"Gone goose" is American slang going back to around 1830. I was thinking along the lines of dead in the water, but it's closer to the current meaning of "dead duck". Maybe it doesn't fit, since it's the result of the problem, not the problem itself.

Skipvia, thanks for the sandbox idea, but I think I will confine this list to noun phrases, and occasionally adjectives, and prepositional phrases of place.

Oroboros, thanks for reminding me about those horns, but the fecal sandwich I'll have to think about.
