Hay, how about roman numerals? As in Henry XVIII? Or better yet, the number XXVI?

Truly an inspired list. Now I wontvbe able to get any work done thinking about silent Vs... You could always make like a Roman and declare U and V identical.

Gangerh, I'm sure I'm all too unsilent for most, but thanks for the vote!

Bovver Boots. But I can't tell you which 'v' is the silent one.
And I often thought of Asativum as being v. silent, from time to time.
Also 'v' when spoken as 'against'.
Here's an in isible one if that's any good.

Does anyone have a suggestion for the missing silent 'v', whose continued absence serves as a mute reproach to this list? One suggestion I've seen is 'fivepence', but I pronounce the 'v' in that word, so don't feel I can legitimately include it.

Wonderful! I made a similar list about fifteen years ago, but I can't find a record of it. I used kjeldahlization for the silent "j". Can't remember if I found a silent "v".
