      <description>To subscribe another to an attribute or group.  As in phrases like "you women", or "new yorkers think that" said in ear shot of somebody you ascribe as being a New Yorker.  Ascription runs the usual risks of pinning labels to others: likely to over simplify, stereotype, and offend.</description>
