I think of hip-hop as different from rap in that it has more of a melody.

I don't claim to be an expert on rap, but there was certainly that type of music prior to '89. But back in those days it was called hip-hop and was a lot more fun to listen to. :-)

Now I have been sitting on my milkshake since my ballet days, which barely predate rap. (Wasn't the first rap song in '89? Am I making that up?)
