Depending how metaphorical the places need to be, consider pilfering a few from my Never been there list.
Lower Slobobia and Upper Slobobia were featured in the Lil' Abner cartoon strip from time to time as I recall.
sionnach, I love this list! For other Snicket fans out there, I recommend the addition of Briny Beach, the Mortmain Mountains, Lake Lachrymose, and my all-time favourite, the Hotel Denouement. Oh... and the Village of Fowl Devotees.
--uselessness-- try Arcadia, Greece, next time, and you'll probably have more to "write home about". The original is always better. I suspect this "Arcadia, FL" of which you speak is a classic example of intentional misleading place naming, a la "Greenland".
I've been to Arcadia, Florida. Nothing to write home about, unless you're a great fan of desolation. ;-) One of my favorite video games is an RPG called Skies of Arcadia. I'm currently on my fourth run through it, and though the game's been out for years, it never gets old.
Glad to see my name made it on this list, for it's poetic attributes I suppose, since Arcadia IS an actual, geographical place one can visit.
Ha! I'm going to use Waikikamukau frequently in the future.
Sionnach, I was very disturbed when I clicked on this list to read the latest comment, and saw that you have 6666 words. AAAAGH! The number of the beast!! Congrats anyway. (And happy 2008...)
Lower Shebobia is a real place in Nova Scotia... I think. :D One of my colleagues uses it to refer to any place remote, which is (pardon the pun) miles above the usual Bumfuck variations you hear from most folks.
How about Waikikamukau (pronounced 'Why-kick-a-moo-cow')? It's "a bogus Maori word for an imaginary small rural town or locality in New Zealand. New Zealanders use the word for any town or to denote a particularly remote rural town."
The Australian equivalent is Woop-Woop.
