Humorist...? Please...
Perhaps textist, or telephemeist (writer of telephemes).
Thanks, mollusque--all good suggestions, though I agree that commentator unfortunately has taken on a far different connotation than it once had.
How about amorist and epigrammatist? There's also commentator in its former sense, now weakened by talking heads.
Thanks, SoG! Mollusque, thanks for obituarist--had meant to add it and forgot. Don't know about jotter, though, since the definitions I've seen don't describe anything but note-taking. :-)
Excellent list!
An obituary writer is an obituarist.
How about jotter?
People tend to have lots of words for their group, writers just happen to write them all down.
Hey, thanks all! I never realized how long this list could get! I intended this to be a list of writers who actually create what they're writing (as opposed to, say, a transcriptionist), so most of these fit. Guess I'll have to leave doodler out, though, oroboros, even though I like it. Not that I don't have a zillion other lists it can go on. ;-)
Doodler?
Wonderful list! I've always wanted to be a pulp fiction writer. It would be cool to be able to write an entire 300 page novel during one afternoon.
"It was a dark & stormy night in Wordieland & John was intent on finishing an entire bottle of Jack Daniels..."
How about monographer?
haikuist!
storier: a relater of stories, or historian
belletrist?
obituary writer? I guess eulogies are always spoken, so eulogist probably doesn't fit. I think necrologist is the corresponding word for written materials.
You too, U? :-) Great ones--thanks!
I have more...
fantasist, drafter, stenographer(?), penman, scribbler, scrawler, graffitist(?), cub, scrivener...
Yes, but I'm enjoying your addiction ever so much. I keep meaning to get back to this list myself to come up with more entries, but you're doing the work for me!
fabulist, allegorist
understandable. i'm starting to grasp at straws but i can't let this list go.
Gee, nice to know it's addictive. ;-)
Thanks, tag. I'm going to skip "poetess" because I already have "poet" (and it's...oh, I hate this phrase...gender neutral). But I'll take proser. I don't think I even knew it was a word until now!
proser
this list is addicting me. poetess
Good one! Thanks, tag.
how about sonneteer?
Thanks, guys! Great words! Uselessness, I'm aiming for words that describe people who actually create the work rather than just copy, so maybe not transcriptionist. Secretary works, if you're not thinking of what's now called an administrative assistant, I guess. :-)
C_b, I think scriobhfadh is the correct spelling. (I checked it out.)
You have scribe, but you don't have scriobhfadh, which (I hope to God I spelled it correctly) is my favorite Gaelic word.
Hmm, how about secretary, copywriter, spin doctor, transcriptionist, letterer, muse? Not sure if any of those are general enough for you, but take your pick. :-)
Good grief, yarb--you're doing all the work for me! Thanks for all the great suggestions! Reporter is already on the list, but all the rest are added. :-)
Oh, and makar, an old Scots term for a bard.
Epithalamist - a writer of epithalamia (wedding odes).
Palinodist - a writer of palinodes (recantatory verses).
Parodist and satirist - writers of parodies and satires respecitvely.
Psalmist. Songsmith, tunesmith.
Epistler - letter writer.
Gazetteer, reporter.
Chime in! I'm sure I've missed many. :-)
