Thanks, mollusque--all good suggestions, though I agree that commentator unfortunately has taken on a far different connotation than it once had.

How about amorist and epigrammatist? There's also commentator in its former sense, now weakened by talking heads.

People tend to have lots of words for their group, writers just happen to write them all down.

Hey, thanks all! I never realized how long this list could get! I intended this to be a list of writers who actually create what they're writing (as opposed to, say, a transcriptionist), so most of these fit. Guess I'll have to leave doodler out, though, oroboros, even though I like it. Not that I don't have a zillion other lists it can go on. ;-)

Wonderful list! I've always wanted to be a pulp fiction writer. It would be cool to be able to write an entire 300 page novel during one afternoon.

Thanks, guys! Great words! Uselessness, I'm aiming for words that describe people who actually create the work rather than just copy, so maybe not transcriptionist. Secretary works, if you're not thinking of what's now called an administrative assistant, I guess. :-)

C_b, I think scriobhfadh is the correct spelling. (I checked it out.)

You have scribe, but you don't have scriobhfadh, which (I hope to God I spelled it correctly) is my favorite Gaelic word.

Hmm, how about secretary, copywriter, spin doctor, transcriptionist, letterer, muse? Not sure if any of those are general enough for you, but take your pick. :-)

Palinodist - a writer of palinodes (recantatory verses).

Parodist and satirist - writers of parodies and satires respecitvely.

Psalmist. Songsmith, tunesmith.

Epistler - letter writer.

Gazetteer, reporter.
