Wow. Those were tough ones!

Cool quiz though. I'll keep an eye out for the next one. Maybe I'll guess more than one too!

Closing out this quiz, the remaining answers are Salammbo* for #7, and las Ramblas for #10.

*: or possibly Salammbô, the eponymous heroine of Flaubert's 1862 historical novel, set in Carthage during the tumultuous third century BCE.

las Ramblas is one of Barcelona's main thoroughfares.

Thanks to everyone who contributed answers. if I manage to work up another quiz, I will try to give more advance notice next time.

Not so much French literature as coffee...

Is there a Spanish cognate of amble/ramble? Cause that's my guess for #10.

You can keep your Carthaginian beauty, sionnach, I'm done. I wouldn't mind another quiz, though, 'specially if I'm not late next time.

Nope, that was trivet, sionnach. (I know we look alike from here.)

10 months ago sionnach said:

Yes, reesetee! Rimbaud for #8.

10 months ago trivet said:

Rimbaud?

10 months ago sionnach said:

Yea! c_b - Columbo it is!

7, 8, and 10 are still open.

10 is actually pretty straightforward, if you've ever been in Barcelona.

7 and 8 are a little more obscure, but surely someone on Wordie has studied 19th century French literature?

Columbo? As in, Peter Falk?

Is it really fair to list that word twice even if it's spelled differently?

Just kidding. This was a really clever quiz, sionnach! I wish I were a smarter person, but it's always a learning experience reading your lists!

Jeesh, could you be any more cryptic? ;-) How about Humperdinck, am I on the right track?

A one-eyed raincoat model with excellent detective skills, who also appears in "The Princess Bride"?

Does that help?

10 months ago uselessness said:

Not in the least. ;-)

10 months ago sionnach said:

David's heavy-handed efforts to lead the witnesses came to naught, apparently....

#4 is Colombo.
#3 is a "raincoat model".

Would it help if I said that we are dealing with a one-eyed raincoat model?

10 months ago chained_bear said:

We have a lot in common, then, sionnach. I wonder too.
;)

10 months ago sionnach said:

Yes. Number 4 is Colombo. I wonder what number 3 could be.

10 months ago uselessness said:

Sri Lanka? So... um... Colombo?

10 months ago sionnach said:

OK: I'll give a hint on #4. serendipity comes from the kingdom of Serendip, which is nowadays called ?

10 months ago uselessness said:

Did I say bumbershoot? And the question is about raincoats? Whoops, stupid me. It's Friday and my thoughts are already on the weekend. ;-)

10 months ago trivet said:

Awww, I'm late.

I'd second a tenative Dido for #7. And for #8, errr...Sambo?

I don't know anything about obscure raincoats.

10 months ago reesetee said:

I see the "mb" thing going on, but some of these are totally flummoxing. At least I made out better than on Identify the Wordie. ;-)

10 months ago uselessness said:

I'm still stumped, but here are a couple wild guesses...

3. bumbershoot?
4. stumble?
7. Dido?
8. absolutely no idea
10. ditto that

I don't know any of these answers, but I want to add the words adumbra and penumbra and la bamba and rochambeau to this page.

So there! I did.

10 months ago sionnach said:

1 = mamba, 2 = gumbo, 5 = limbo, 6=namby-pamby, 9= bomb bus, 11= marimba, 12 = grampas are correct.

Still leaves 3,4,7,8,10.

10 months ago uselessness said:

I'm pretty clueless, but...

1. mamba
9. bomb bus?
10. amblers?

10 months ago reesetee said:

Ooh! Let's see....
Okay, I have a few, I think:

2. Gumbo
4. Umbo
5. Limbo
6. Namby-pamby
11. Marimba
12. Grandpas

Back later, unless someone beats me to it (and around here, I wouldn't be surprised).

Uhh... No, I can't. *feels really dense*

This looks like fun though!
