Of mixed difficulty. There is no overall theme. I've tried to group the questions by difficulty level, but it's hard to predict what other people may find hard. They may all just fall in the category of being easy if you know the answer, hard if you don't.

Use of search engines is not only allowed, but encouraged. Enjoy.

The done/Donne seems to me like quite the red herring. I never would have put those two together, even though I read a done/Donne pun earlier today!

Fun! Thanks for your efforts, sionnach. BTW, if you didn't see it, check apple for a little challenge...

Heming : Jefferson :: Butler : Thurmond

(think fathering of an unacknowledged child)

tango : chaos :: Kent : Lear

Tango and Chaos are the counterparts of Kent and Lear in Kurosawa's film adaptation of the King Lear story, "Ran".

done : more :: posh : Beckham

Had Entertainment Weekly been around during the time of the metaphysical poets, as a media star of the age, John Donne would surely have been featured in the gossip section. In particular, his marriage to Anne More would have made the "Milestones" column.

And if you had forgotten who Donne was married to, reminders are sprinkled throughout his poem:

"A Hymn to God the Father"

WILT Thou forgive that sin where I begun,
Which was my sin, though it were done before?
Wilt Thou forgive that sin through which I run,
And do run still, though still I do deplore?
When Thou hast done, Thou hast not done;
For I have more.

Wilt Thou forgive that sin which I have won
Others to sin, and made my sins their door?
Wilt Thou forgive that sin which I did shun
A year or two, but wallow'd in a score? 10
When Thou hast done, Thou hast not done;
For I have more.

......

Those metaphysical boys did like their elaborate puns.

yes, yes!

82 : bear :: 45 : farewell (Haydn symphonies)

quake : shake :: fox : lee (founders of the Quakers and Shakers, respectively)

Well done, oroboros and trivet!

Still outstanding -

Heming : Jefferson :: Butler : ?
Done : More :: Posh : ?
Tango : Chaos :: Kent : ?

The first of these should not be all that difficult. The second is admittedly quite obscure. The last one requires familiarity with film and literature (big hairy hint!)

Full answers will be provided tonight.

I don't know if my brain stops at the same stations as yours, sionnach.

very good, oroboros! Explanation below:

Mars = 4th planet from the sun = war
Venus = 2nd planet from the sun = love

20 is the atomic number for calcium, whose chemical symbol is Ca, which is also the two-letter state code for California.

49 is the atomic number for Indium, with chemical symbol In. The current governor of Indiana is Mitch Daniels.

49 : Daniels
love : 2

Wow! I saw "pecan" and "open" both contained pen and went from there. The bog mindles!
My next guess would have been "pecan: tiger :: open : cage". If I were in a room with a pecan I would want to open it. If I were in a room with a tiger I would want to cage it.

9 months ago sionnach said:

mollusque: Amazing! Right answer, though the explanation why is nowhere near as convoluted. The second word is obtained from the first word just by applying a 4-letter shift.

9 months ago mollusque said:

This one is really reaching, but...
pecan: tiger :: open : stir .

Take "pecan" or "tiger", prefix it with the letter of the alphabet immediately before its starting letter, then delete the two letters that come first in the alphabet from the result. Pecan -> opecan -> open ; tiger -> stiger -> stir.

mollusque: Your line of argument is exactly right. "lion" is the correct answer.

9 months ago mollusque said:

Hmmm. I was sure it was a venereal term: a "shrewdness of apes". But I see in An Exaltation of Larks that peacocks comes in ostentations, not proudnesses. So, if the noun of shrewd is shrewdness and the noun of proud is pride, then

shrewd: ape :: proud : lion.

9 months ago sionnach said:

Nope, not peacock.

proud: peacock

9 months ago sionnach said:

Yea, trivet! Fortitude, the other NY City library lion, is correct. as are Lear and omega. But why box?

Still remaining:

pecan ; tiger :: open : ?
82 : bear :: 45 : ?
heming : Jefferson :: Butler : ?
shrewd : ape :: proud : ?
war : 4 :: love : ?

and the four "hard" clues.

In case anyone is puzzled, Marengo was napoleon's horse.

9 months ago trivet said: oooH!

Rumpleteazer: Fortitude!

um...

mad: Lear
omicron: omega

fox:box?

All good answers so far, except:

"hylobatidine" is close, but not quite correct.
'Dunsinane' is not correct.
'Edward' is not what I had in mind for 'Butler'.

Napoleon: Marengo
