Thanks c_b, all really cute :-)
I humbly submit Tickle Cove, Newfoundland. Not as good as Dildo (which apparently lies near Conception Bay and Come-by-Chance), but still pretty good.
*writing grocery list*
A lot of the places would make great brand or generic names for food and drinks. I'm sure I'd like to try Middelfart beans, perhaps even spinach from Sally's Bottom, followed by a Herpes cupcake for dessert. Now that's a menu to toast with Ass-Sweat wine.
Another town in Slovenia, which perhaps should be a sister town to Eek, Alaska, is Ig, which is pronounced "eek".
You will one day, I'm sure.
And yet I haven't seen that wine on the shelves of my local store.
Then there's the village of Ritoznoj, in Slovene Styria. The name translates literally as "ass sweat", after the hard-working peasants there. A popular wine blend comes from that area, and it's called ritoznojčan - yes, "ass-sweat wine".
Has anybody mentioned Assawoman Bay, in Maryland, yet? And, near Cuzco, Peru, is the Inca complex known as Sacsayhuamán, which is pronounced, approximately, as "sexy woman".
Good grief! Some of us have enough trouble spelling "Bangkok"!
I've always liked 'Foggy Bottom' and 'The Little Old Lady of Threadneedle Street'.
What is it with Thai names anyway? Why are the Chinese able to come up with apparently unique identifiers that can be written in as few as four letters (a colleague at work was called 'Xu Lu'). Whereas any self-respecting Thai name takes up at least several lines in the phone directory. (Check out the names of the cabinet members at the government website sometime and you'll see what I mean).
It's as if a linguistic switch (option='verbose') were flipped between the two languages.
Thanks r_t. I've had a look at U's list as a few that I've listed have shown up on his as well.
And now for something completely different. This is too long to list as a word so I'll do it here. A former official name for the city of Bangkok in Thailand was:
Krung Thep Maha Nakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayutthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udom Ratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Phiman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanu Kamprasit.
Meaning, obviously:
'The city of angels, the great city, the eternal jewel city, the impregnable city of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resem'bles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukam'.
I'd probably BangHead after all that.
Ah, another excellent place names list, and this one is *serious*! ;-) Thanks, bilby. You may enjoy kad's NJ list, uselessness' NM list, and my PA list, while you're at it (please jump in if I missed any of the "state names" lists).
I've been at Me No Sen You No Come, Rest and Be Thankful, and Barbecue Bottom, all in Jamaica's Cockpit Country, an amazing karst area with some of the last remaining virgin forest in the Caribbean.
We'll have to make sure and stop by Show Low, Arizona on that trip, bilby. It's right on Deuce of Clubs Road, down below Holbrook. A beautiful spot, indeed...
I hope I can go travelling with Skipvia one day, he knows all the cool places ;-) Thanks!
There's a village in Alaska named Eek. It's actually a Yupik name meaning "our eyes." A well-known Native artist named Chuna is from Eek.
Not too far from Lizard Lick, NC, is a little place called Frog Level.
And then there is the oddly-named Onancock, VA. Sort of makes you wonder what the cartographer was thinking...
Yessssss!
I once mailed a postcard from Hell, Cayman Islands.
