In the eighties you couldn't go to a second-hand book market and NOT find a Pritikin diet book.
Apparently when my mother was a teenager the in thing was the "green apple" diet, which I suppose is similar to the cabbage soup diet.

One that sticks in my mind is the Israeli Army diet, a kind of fad that had nothing to do with either the Israeli Army or nutrition. Last time I heard this chestnut was about a week ago.
