I guess there's also cathartic buying. And corybantic buying. chthonic, demonic, hedonic buying.

gangerh - I get most of your references, but some of these in this list, I don't. (I can't see the hedge for the thicket.) It may be because of British idioms such as many cricket idioms go right past me.

Probably being a bit thick here but can't fathom what you mean, fbharjo. Kindly explain.

The only disadvantage to splitting the words into separate lists by letter is that imposing that structure deprives other Wordie members of the fun of seeing the free association process by which one adds words to a general list.

The sweet tooth fairy list is completely addictive - you have to picture me muttering possible candidates to myself in the dairy aisle at the supermarket....

If you plan on adding many words, let me offer a word of advice, based on bitter experience. If you set up a general non-themed catchall list (as almost everyone does), there may come a point (usually once it gets above 1000 words) where you regret it, because the longer the list, the longer it takes to add words. It can slow you down quite a bit. A possible alternative is to set up a separate list for each letter of the alphabet.
