Words that incorporate some sense of contest or conflict through the use of one or another of the combining elements with that meaning (i.e., -machia, -machy, -machist, -machic, -machical, belli-, milit-, pugn-, etc.).

It should be noted that the endings -machia and -machy are interchangeable. For consistency, I use the form -machia throughout, but historical usage in English of these forms shows that they may all be employed with either ending; thus a hieromachia may also be a hieromachy, or pyromachia may also be a pyromachy, etc.

Similarly, -machia may be replaced by -machist to indicate a person who engages in the activity described by the word; and -machic will form an adjective. E.g., from misomachia, "hate for war", we may form misomachist, "someone who hates or is against war", and misomachic, "war-hating", etc. Be wary, though: not all words formed in this way have entered into usage with quite the expected meanings. Compare epimachic with epimachia for instance.

Though the above possible forms are or would be valid, I have tried to enter here only those words with actually attested usage in some source, classical or modern.
