How about multiply?
How about preferment?
Thanks mollusque. Didn't have that or lather. Also good to learn the proper term for these words.
Have you seen wiredweird's allophonic homographs? Short but sweet. Unionized led me to it.
How about predate?
Thanks all. They just keep surfacing don't they?
Not a common one, but ... ton.
How about moped, perfect, and rebel? Recenter is another possibility, although most people would say "more recent" rather than "recenter". And then there's reset or resetter, to do with receiving stolen goods.
Oops, reesetee figured out the error of my ways. I'd like to claim that it was a typo (or a clever ruse), but it was a lapse. For "peaked" (pointed vs. pale) MW3 gives different first pronunciations, but OED2 gives the same pronunciation.
Mollusque, could you have meant "peaked" rather than "peeked"?
Mollusque: I'm at sixes and sevens about 'peeked'. It doesn't ring a bell. Help me here. Is the second pronunciation 'keep ED'? and if, say, Hamlet din't say it, whassit mean?
Thankyouvermuch, c_b. You'se a peach 'n more, and other such-like encomiata. :oD
Secreted?
Peeked.
How about dogged?
Convict.
I'll ditto c_b's ass comment. And pontificate belongs on my bi-sonics list. Thanks bilby.
Yes, bilby, that noun rhymes with certificate. And yes, where I live, "ass" is pronounced the same way whether denoting body part or donkey. I think you have a couple of winners.
Today I read: "Thérèse was the only Saint to be
given recognition as a Doctor of the Church during Pope John Paul II's pontificate." Now if this noun rhymes with certificate then it would be different to its verbal pronounciation.
I just wonder whether ass (beast of burden; body part) is pronounced identically for both senses wherever you live? In Australia no, but then again we often use the spelling arse for the latter.
I keep running across these now. Another, at the grocery store: produce
Just ran across a couple more today: entrance (to captivate, and something you go in through) and intern (to imprison, and a low-paid or unpaid employee in training)
thanx for these good ones :o)
Lead
(On a related note, I was very surprised to find some Polish remover at a store once.)
initiate, supposed
Excellent! I particularly like "primer" and "august", though I think "slough" will have to be my favorite. Favorited. :-)
