Thanks, mollusque! I'm sticking to words that aren't nicknames, though. That does give me a good idea, though--a list of bird nicknames (rather than their standard English-language names). Hmm....

How about checkerbelly? Defined as "a white-fronted goose" in MW3.

Thanks, SoG--I'll add those to my list of non-U.S. bird names (Still More Bird Wirds). This one sort of morphed into North American birds by default, though I'm still sorting through them to organize along those lines.

I didn't know about the alternate meaning for drongo, though. Sounds much better than dumbass to me. :-)

How about drongo? This has another meaning (see Urban Dictionary), but it is a bird as well!

Tit is another bird name.

Actually, that *does* sound a lot like the ol' office--except the comments about the redpoll, bushtit, and wrentit. We don't talk like that around here. :->

Thanks, palooka. Some of my favorite birds have my favorite words as names. Come to think of it, some of my favorite words are bird names. But I guess that explains this list.

Why aren't these words in more common usage, is what I wanna know. Imagine how much more fun our cubicle jobs would be.

"Hey, Bishop! Where's the longspur towhee report?"
"Emberizid! What are you doing back, I thought you were on vacation with that hot redpoll?!"
"Which one?"
"Which one? Jeez, you got more than one?"
"Yeah, the bushtit or the wrentit, which one?"
"Man, you are one ani guillemot."
"You don't say. Now where's the toucan report, jackdaw?"
"Well, it isn't done yet."
"It isn't *done*? It's been two months! What kind of shelduck operation are we running here?"
"Hey, it wasn't just me, Bobolink and Waxwing were on the committee!"
"Listen, I don't give one crake of a phalarope *who* else is on the committee. Now let's get Bobwhite, Kittiwake, and Phoebe on this today. And you know who else would be good, Dickcissel."
"OK, OK, just calm down! You're gonna get yourself a swift coot to the limpkin with that attitude."
