I don't know about German, but I've heard that jeep is just a spelled-out form of "G.P.," referring to a "general purpose" vehicle. That name comes from the old military use, before Jeep became a commercial brand. Similar to how humvee actually means "High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle" and has since become sold under the "Hummer" name.
I remember reading that the German word for "jeep" is really long, but I can't find it. At least, I think it was German. And I think it was jeep. Hmm. Anyhoo, sorry about messing up the main page with these words :)
