the worshipful company of haberdashers

[ feed | comment feed | cloud | sort:  alpha / order added ]
NB: this list being not limited to haberdashery in the strictest sense, but also including items of the milliner's trade, the mercer's trade, and the tailor's trade, it is to be noted that I just rather like the title.

frindley, that is the best idea I've heard in forever.

Oh, frindley, I am so there.

You have inspired me to begin a list called "His Majesty's Cornetts and Sagbutts"

metallic is a weird kind of name for fabric, not just an adjective.

thanks, bilby! that's a good one!

Batik comes to mind, just because it's so much trouble. Imagine tracing a (negative) design in hot wax, dyeing the fabric, boiling the cloth to get the wax off, re-applying the wax to what is already dyed, dyeing it again to bring out the highlights, boiling it again, etc. Phew! And the term applies to both the fabric and the process.

Love this list... I respectfully submit "pinking shears," which I added in a fit of... something... yesterday.

slantrhyme, I didn't see your suggestions until just today, thank you for all of them! some I did have already, but most I did not. :)

What a great list! I've always loved the word "placket." And what about petticoat and crinoline and cummerbund . . . nylon, polyester, rayon (not nearly as gauche as they used to be) . . . taffeta, organdy . . . maybe twill and herringbone and houndstooth (to go with tattersall)? . . . mackintosh, overcoat, slicker . . . ? (I'm resisting the temptation to grab my Roget's!)

"Pleat" is one of my favorite fashion-related words, you should add that. :)
