Fascinating! Let us know if/when you find out more, oroboros.
I would guess you're right sionnach. The thingy (which looks like a short, fat silver wand without tapering) has some Hebrew on it I would like to have translated but never seem to get organized enough to do. It was entrusted to me for safe keeping by my Grandmother, who had been made its custodian by her revered spiritual mentor, an adept of sorts, apparently, who used it or knew what it was. I'm guessing it has a connection to some form of gnosticism, and the number of names being 12 perhaps relates it to the Zodiac.
This device thingy makes no mention of the angel schlemiel, who is in the ascendant when the planets are out of alignment?
On a more serious note, does the suffix "iel" have a specific angel-related connotation. I'm thinking also of the angel Gabriel. Though I guess Ezekiel was not an angel.
Nor, for that matter, was Galadriel. maybe a connotation of holiness, or spirituality?
