How about tomtit, which is not only a bird, but a kind of boat.
And good for you, rolig! As I mention above, this list will probably never be finished, but I'm always happy to add to it. :-)
Dontcry, thanks for the mojito. You're right--they certainly deserve to be world-famous. *calmer now*
I have to say, I was surprised that I listed glede before you did, reesetee. I came across it via my Literati addiction.
Sorry, r. I read too quickly and saw "still more birds" and of course, i went, you know....there... Here, have a mojito to calm your nerves ;-).
Whaaa...? ME?? Good grief, no!
Oh, thank God! When I read the title of this list, I thougt you were offing birds!
Thanks, m!
Merl.
Good one, mollusque--thanks!
How about urubu?
Already have cockatiel listed, m, but I'll add this too. Thanks.
How about quarrion?
*giggles*
Uh oh. That's an idea for another bird list! Shall we?
Simorgh appears in Persian poetry, though it's mythical.
Thank you! They go nicely with chiffchaff, gang-gang, and weet-weet. :-)
More monovocalic birds: torotoro and zoozoo.
Thanks, mollusque!
How about kagu?
That's it! I'm making a "bird nicknames" list. Sionnach, that'll be the first one on it. :-)
Then there is the welsh ambassador.
Good one, mollusque! Did you know that it was spelled eeeeve back in the 1700s? (Just looked it up.) That's a lot of Es.
By the way, I added it to "More Bird Wirds" instead of this list--that one's for the States. :-)
How about iiwi?
How many bats would a wombat bat if a wombat could bat bats in combat?
That's because a) it's far from being an exhaustive list of bird names (I'm still adding to it), and b) it's one of several bird lists I've made. Some of the ones you name are on "More Bird Wirds." The others I shall duly add. Thanks, bilby!
Oh, by the way--the "respectable" words are what I'm shooting for here. :-) Nicknames might end up being a whole other list.
I can't find any of the following in your list: wagtail, skua, kingfisher, cockatoo, galah, gang-gang, brolga, jacana, darter, ibis and jabiru. A few Australian ones in there but they're all respectable words.
Oh woe! Our wallaby lobbing lobby is oddly wobbly!
I'd go to bat for combat wombats, especially if they're Tibetan combat wombats. ;-)
Welsh birders? Not I!
> nor would I lobby for Wallaby Lobbing
But how do you feel about combat wombats?
Has Wordie been taken over by some splinter group of Welsh birders?
Really? An actual bird name? I always thought it was just a nickname, like our little brown jobs here in the States. :-)
Bilby, I don't truck with chucking marsupials, nor would I lobby for Wallaby Lobbing. ;-)
Sheesh, everyone seems to want to chuck our marsupials around. See quokka. We probably missed the boat by failing to lobby for Wallaby Lobbing as an Olympic sport.
According to OED2, weet-weet is the sound of both a chaffinch and a sandpiper, but also the name of a sandpiper and a kangaroo-rat.
From one of the quotations "A peculiar toy is the weet-weet or ‘kangaroo-rat’, which the practised player can throw to enormous distances."
Isn't that a chaffinch, mollusque?
How about weet-weet, a kind of sandpiper?
Thanks, mollusque! As you might guess, this list is a work in progress. :-)
How about fernbird, from New Zealand?
For all you bird lovers: cockyolly bird an expression meaning "dear little bird," used both about birds and as an endearment. It is a variant of dicky-bird.
I like bristlehead and wrybill myself. They sound like stand-up comedians. :-)
My favorites: chough, rook, apostle bird
They just look so sassy.
