Cool list sionnach. It really shows a way we like to combine concepts into phrases.
These are all good suggestions - thanks! Wikipedia on "black spot"
The Black Spot is a fictional literary device invented by Robert Louis Stevenson for his novel Treasure Island. In the book, a pirate is presented with a "black spot" to officially pronounce a verdict of guilt or judgment. It consists of a circular piece of black paper or card placed in the hand of the accused.
but later in the Wikipedia piece
There is no record of "black spots" in reality and how Stevenson came up with the idea is unknown.
So (probably because I was never a fan of "Treasure Island" as much as anything else) I've decided against it.
What joy there is in this ability to exercise power while making petty decisions about questions of no import whatsoever!
The black spot corresponds to the 'short stick' in drawing straws...'cept yer marked for, gulp!, death! (used by, gasp!, pirates!) I think this comes from Robert Lewis Stevenson's Long John Silver, the pirate, character of "Treasure Island". I think...mebbe...yas, mebbe. No money-back garuntee, 'course.
How 'bout tickled pink, blue laws, red herring, red handed, blue blood, rose-colored glasses?
what is the black spot?
A zebra with diaper rash?
pregnant nun in a confessional; newspaper?
Great list! Favorited
