Yeah, dammit. If only everyone thought the same! ;-)

Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Pity this site is so full of free thinkers.

Gee, this democracie stuff shure is hard.

You know what u, I want amongmid on the list too! A friend of mine adds mid to a lot of stuff, so it's getting my support too.

I'm getting confused amongmid all the political options or lack thereof.

We'll be glad to have you on our side when we overthrow you.

Me, good old anti-authoritarian uselessness, keeping you down?
You, the friendly apolitical Wordie users, staging a revolt?
I'm clearly on the wrong team. Can I revolt against myself?

Additionally, this is a four-party system. Introduce any more than that and the whole bureaucracy falls apart -- and then we won't even be able to revolt together. Takes all the fun out of everything. So I shall be firm on the write-in issue, so that I might someday be able to overthrow myself.

smack dab as well. Quit trying to keep us down, u, or there will be a revolt.

Not allowing for write-ins is sheer uselessness. I'm voting for smack dab.

I vote amongmid. And that's final.
Wait... maybe aming.

Hey, don't blame me, sionnach. Didn't you know this site is owned by Diebold? Besides, what good is democracy without oratory, and the chance to persuade your fellow man to vote for your completely unimportant candidate? Where are my Ciceros?

I still vote amid

about 1 year ago sionnach said:

if we get only one vote, then among. but there were severe voting irregularities in this election, not least of which is the lack of a secret bullet.

Amidst a plethora of peonies, confusion rained.

Amid! Amid!

I should mention that I chose the word stuff carefully, because it's imprecise and I knew this issue would come up. The goal is make you pick a candidate, not in terms of grammatical correctness, but of personal preference. And you only get one vote! And you must state your choice quickly and clearly, before the polls close!

Y'all are so wishy-washy. Are we going to need a recount?

about 1 year ago trivet said: since I can't write in...

among suggests discrete surroundings - they could be counted, if you felt like it:

"Here we come a wassailing among the leaves so green"
honor among thieves

amid suggests more diffuse surroundings - much harder to count:

"I stand amid the roar/Of a surf-tormented shore" (Poe)
standing amid the ruins

Hmm. If we're in the middle of a bunch of *things*, I say amid. If we're in the middle of a bunch of *people*, among. So assuming "stuff" means "things," amid gets my vote.

We can't vote twice?

about 1 year ago notanotherjazzpoet said: context reigns supreme

but because it's "in the middle of a bunch of stuff" I'm going with amid For some reason, among has connotations of similarity across the group in my head, and being not stuff, I'd prefer to be amid it.

Could we have some music whilst we are pondering our options?

This is easy; 'amongst' is only for pretentious gits, or those who don't object to being mistaken for pretentious gits.
My choice: (to avoid the stigma of pretentious gitdom):
among and amid. Which of these two to use in a particular context might have something to do with the countability or otherwise of whatever one is in the middle of. Not sure about this.

Sorry, write-in candidates not allowed. ;-)

How about smack dab in the middle?
