Wait a minute--that's not what I had in mind when I saw "packed rat." :-O

Smarty pants! Although I do like the image of a packed rat. Before the rat goes back to his own nest, his father ties a lot of stuff on his back. He is a fully packed rat.

Don't you mean whip cream? And what about packed rat?

That's funny. . .I am sure I could find a piece. . .it is right there under the books in my basement.

Good grief, what a blast from the past! My mother was very taken with "whipped cream" fabric for a time....

Oh, I wonder if anyone recalls "whipped cream" It was a lightweight synthetic briefly popular in the late 60s or early 70s. I think I still have a piece of it that I intended to use for a blouse!

Yikes! A pen?? No wonder you were batting at ladies' ankles like a kitten!

It was only the department stores that got to me. Fabric stores were much better - all the different designs and textures to look at and drape about oneself. Except this one store my mom used to go to. The lady who owned it hated children, so she built a pen outside the store for pesky kids to stay in while their mothers were shopping. It had an astroturf floor and a few grubby plastic toys. *huuuhg*

Wasn't just dresses :) I grew up just outside of Boston.

Trivet and AZ--you had that same experience?? Actually, the only thing I didn't like about those long hours in fabric stores was inhaling all the fumes of the chemicals they use on the fabric. The rest was kind of fun.

And AZ? I hope you didn't live anywhere near me! Then again, I don't wear dresses, so who cares? ;-)

Thanks, sionnach. I'm telling you, if you're hiding in a carousel, those passing ankles are just waiting for you to pounce - like stealing napkins in relatives' laps from under the table at big family dinners...

I used to pick my nose and wipe it on the most expensive dresses I came across. Also, I hid in the carousels and pretended to be a sniper or spy.

What, you didn't hide in the carousels and / make animal noises / bat at ladies' ankles like a kitten / pull clothes down from the hangers / refuse to come out? Always good for a short trip to the store.

Oh My God, I thought this was going to be a word for what happens to a kid forced to wait around in Fabric Stores. I mean, I used to be hauled all over the joint by my mom and she would spend hours in Department Stores. I used to get headaches and my stomach would hurt and no amount of pleading affected her. It was truly horrific.

The product of a childhood that involved a lot of waiting in fabric stores.
