Well, I didn't say it was proper, just that it's "more properly called..." And it was said by said local geek, not me! ;)

Here's a stupid footnote from Wikipedia: "In almost every episode from season three onward, various crewmembers can be seen pulling down their shirts when they ride up on the body. Because this action was popularized by Picard, it informally became known as the "Picard maneuver." (Citation: Okuda, Mike and Denise Okuda, with Debbie Mirek, The Star Trek Encyclopedia. Pocket Books, 1999.)

Anyway, isn't it cool that if you got your secret wish and became Captain Picard, you already have a maneuver named after you?! Why, you could even start doing the maneuver NOW, and maybe some people might confuse you with him. Alsome!

What? Since when can anything pertaining to it be called proper? :-P

OK, I've been corrected by a local geek. The Picard-jerk is more properly called the Picard Maneuver.

Don't worry, it's not like it'll run out of room or anything. Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

Eew. That would certainly make space a waste of waste space.

Uh....

8 months ago uselessness said:

It was certainly a step up from the TOS uniforms and their sparkly chest stickers... though I don't know that using the bathroom needed to be a factor. Everybody knows that in the future there are no bathrooms; you just beam the waste out from your body and into space. No muss, no fuss.

Well, that's exactly what the costume discussion centered on. In fact, the Picard-jerk-requiring uniforms were a major improvement on previous unitards. As George Takei mentioned with an expression of horror in this aforementioned program, "adults wearing those costumes needed assistance going to the bathroom!" (I'm paraphrasing.)

So, despite their wanting that space-age-polyester-unitard look (BTW, if that's the future of fashion, uhh...), they finally broke down and designed two-piece costumes for the TNG cast.

Then they nagged everyone to keep their uniforms from looking wrinkly and, you know, like real clothes. Hence the Picard-jerk every time he stands up.

8 months ago uselessness said:

No, the Picard-jerk would definitely have to be Wesley "Gosh, Captain, I wanna be just like you when I grow up" Crusher. ;-)

And you'd think Starfleet would issue more practical uniforms at some point...

They talked about the Picard-jerk for quite a while on some goofy TV show I saw recently, in which they talked about the costumes and other memorabilia from all the different ST series (serieses?) and films. They spent a good minute or so just on the Picard-jerk.

By which I don't mean Riker. AH-HUH! HUH-HUH! < -- upper-class twit laugh

Sorry, uselessness. I completely forgot the Picard-jerk. My humble, non-Trekkie apologies.

Anyway, it's easier than saying uselessness-jerk. And probably far less insulting.

Oh my gosh, YES!! That was a great moment in history. *thinks about Data*

Mmmm... Brent Spiner...

Actually I found the subplot in which Data has an emotion chip installed, and then simply cannot function due to the overwhelming force of the emotions, to be a very moving statement on the human condition. As I'm sure it was meant to be. That scene between him and Picard was just... oh, brilliant is an overused word, but it's very memorable.

There are few better moments in any movie than Data singing "Lifeforms...you tiny little lifeforms..." It's here on YouTube, for those that missed it.

I wasn't a big ST fan, but I really liked TNG. I even liked all the TNG movies, even the ones other people said sucked.

8 months ago uselessness said:

Yes, the Picard-jerk! So that's what it's called... I love how even the little things from that show have become famous.

8 months ago chained_bear said:

It isn't a unitard, silly reesetee. Because every time Picard stands up, he does the Picard-jerk on his shirt to straighten it so there are no wrinkles!

If ever there was a reason for censorship on Wordie... ;-)
