I think, given that I'm also seeing a question mark for http://wordie.org/words/%E2%9A%9C, this is meant to be some other character but it isn't dispaying properly under any character encoding I've tried; maybe my machine just isn't set up to recognise it. So whatever the joke is I can't get it.

It's the Apple symbol. I think it's in the private space of Unicode or something like that, so you need a Mac to see it properly :)
