Monsieur Prolagus's Holiday

This is an open list, anyone can contribute.

Prolagus said: Sigh, I didn't go anywhere. Deadlines are too close. I have to wait until Christmas holidays...

bilby said: Did you find somewhere for your weekend break?

Prolagus said: Prolagus needs a break from the City. If you know some nice country place, not too far from NYC (less than a 2-hour train/bus trip), and feel like recommending it, please contact me via facebook/Flickr mail/comment on my blog/whatever.

EDIT: This list has become both a repository for travel suggestions for Monsieur P and a log of where our doughty adventurer has actually been.

Take a drive along the Shenandoah Mountains in Virginia.

South Florida is pretty flat. For unusual landscapes how about Utah? Bryce and Zion National Parks.

When I'm back, I will have a long weekend for Labor Day. I'd like to go somewhere in the US, some place where I can rent a car for a couple days and explore unusual landscapes. I was thinking about South Florida and Key West. Any alternative suggestion or personal recommendation? (Not necessarily requiring cars)

He's alive! And with no sounds of music!

Welcome back, Pro! Your enormous medical bills will be in your mail when you return home. Please pay them immediately or we will be forced to turn over your account to a collection agency.

Now, enjoy your trip!

Whew. We did it, team! Excellent work.

Now, Prolagus, sir, if you could just sign here on this stack of insurance forms...

What... What happened?
The last thing I can remember is a song... An awfully long Austrian song sung by some voices that were... Just not human.

3 months ago chained_bear said:

Yeah, and nobody cares if she has a myocardial infarction. I mean, she's bragging about it, for heaven's sake.

3 months ago reesetee said:

Wait--isn't Maria the one singing about the hills being alive? So maybe she knows something we don't. I say we track her down and get her to deal with the hills. She's the one scrambling about on them, after all.

3 months ago dontcry said:

I think we need to deal with these creepy singing hills before we can worry about Maria...

3 months ago reesetee said:

Well, that's not going to help get the hill outta here. ;-)

3 months ago plethora said:

♩ How do you solve a problem like Mariiiiaaaa?? ♩

What? Whaddya mean, wrong song?

3 months ago sionnach said:

Do I really have to fjord *every* stream? There's so many of them. Shouldn't I be blowing them up to delay the pursuing Nazis?
Don't even get me started on the freaking rainbows. It's like a goddamned skittles commercial with cow patties up here.
We need more cowbell....

Nurse dc is going to need help from the whole team. These hills have been singing for a thousand years. Come on!

*singing* "Youuuu hills fill someone-else's-hearrrrrrt... get awaaaaaaay from Prolaaaaaaguuuuuuuuss..."

3 months ago dontcry said:

*dons dirndl, begins singing to lure hills away*

"You are aliiiiiiive with the sound of muuuuuuuuusic, la,la,la,la."

*barrels past hills*

They're still here?? Nurse dc! Nurse plethora! Help me push these hills out into the waiting room!

*pictures reesetee in a surgical mask, with hands up in the air like they were just scrubbed and gloved*

Well, he could probably use some Viennese coffee, if he's still suffering from insomnia. At any rate, we've gotta get this sound of music out of his heart. Someone get these hills outta here!

3 months ago reesetee said:

*dons hospital gown*

Get that Viennese coffee out of the ER! It's the last thing this patient needs!

3 months ago chained_bear said:

Asystole! Charging to 300.... Clear!
Pro! Pro! Can you hear me?!

(p.s. I just learned how to spell asystole. *beams with pride*)

Charge to 200! ... Clear!

3 months ago reesetee said:

By God, you're right. Quick; we have to save Prolagus!

3 months ago chained_bear said:

Plus, just say they do fill your heart with the sound of music. You're bound to have a myocardial infarction as a result.

...friggin' hills...

3 months ago reesetee said:

And the echoes from all that singing. Imagine the echoes! Plus they'd probably all be songs I don't like. For a thousand years. *shudders*

3 months ago plethora said:

Tell their mothers - the mountains. And Grandma Everest.

3 months ago chained_bear said:

How about the hills singing songs for a thousand years? That sounds pretty creepy--and annoying too. Imagine trying to get a good night's rest, and the damn hills are singing. What do you do—call the cops?

3 months ago dontcry said:

Right. Got it. Music = not creepy. Alive hills = creepy.

3 months ago reesetee said:

I mean, the music part is nice, but hills being alive? No thanks.

3 months ago dontcry said:

Yeah, it's a little creepy.

3 months ago reesetee said:

That always sounded creepy to me. ;->

Have a great time, Pro!

3 months ago dontcry said:

Ahhh, Vienna. The hills are alive, you know.

3 months ago Prolagus said:

I'm in Graz, waiting for my train to Vienna, right now!

3 months ago chained_bear said:

Well, that says more about rent in Brooklyn than it does about your trips, Pro. :) Hope it was wonderful! Still more to come, or are you settling down for the nonce?

3 months ago Prolagus said:

Some people will think I am rich, since I have traveled a lot lately, but I'm not. Three months of trips have cost much less than a one-month rent for my Brooklyn room...

6 months ago Prolagus said:

Wonderful. And more will follow next week!

6 months ago chained_bear said:

Huzzah! I trust you had a good time?

6 months ago Prolagus said:

I added the cities I just visited in the last week (the reason why I haven't added much lately).

11 months ago reesetee said:

It's not far--less than three hours by car (if you're not stuck in traffic). Beautiful area, too--the Brandywine Valley. Lots of history there. :-)

Edit: Which reminded me--Princeton, NJ and New Hope, PA are two great places to visit (although New Hope has become much more "touristy" and less peaceful these days...).

11 months ago dontcry said:

I'm not sure how far from NYC, I don't think it's too far, but anyway, Winterthur, in Delaware, is very nice: http://www.winterthur.org/about/about.asp

11 months ago Prolagus said:

You are great. :-) Thank you all, keep suggesting/adding!

11 months ago reesetee said:

And mollusque, what about the Mütter Museum? Wouldn't Monsieur Pro enjoy it?

11 months ago mollusque said:

In Philadelphia, the Hadrosaurus exhibit has just opened at the Academy of Natural Sciences, the first remounting of the skeleton in 140 years.

Also in the Hudson Valley:

It's possible to tour West Point (Military Academy) ( West Point

and the C.I.A. (Culinary Institute of America) ( CIA visitors

Both are worthwhile.

I will let someone with local knowledge of Philadelphia make suggestions about its particular charms.

The Roosevelt Mansion in Hyde Park, just north of Poughkeepsie. Accessible by train - about 90 miles from NYC. FDR home
Fun, scenic, AND educational.
