Since you mention it I do vaguely remember encountering that phrase before. And I laughed out loud. Snobberies, some of them are just hilarious.
I think I've only ever heard this word as part of the phrase "the lumpen proletariat", which always amused me for some reason.
I've only ever used this (albeit rarely) as a verbal paronym of the word "lump" e.g. "If you add too much flour it'll lumpen the sauce".
Anyone ever used or heard it used in this sense?
