Old North Carolina nickname for the Ruddy Duck, a creature with more nicknames than it's possible to track. In Virginia it was caled the blatherskite, in Delaware and Arkansas a bristletail, in South Carolina a leatherbreeches, and in Arkansas (in addition to bristletail) a bumble-bee-buzzer.
At least you're not in Arkansas, jennarenn. :-)
This old man came rolling home ...
Why would anyone *ever* need another monicker for the exquisitely named Ruddy Duck? I'm a little ashamed of the Commonwealth.
