Googlefights (and, of course, google) shows you the popularity of a word. Of course it doesn't necessarily mean the most popular is the right one... For example, collutorio (mouthwash) is among the most misspelled Italian words, with the meaningless rival colluttorio that WINS! O.M.G.

I'm sure both spellings would be acceptable to most people, although ninjawords and dictionary.com both seem to favour "thingy".

Interesting...I've always spelled it thingie. Guess it's the Wordie in me. ;-)
